Great Grandfather of

Arvilla Bartz Johnson

My great grandfather, David Benjamin Stillman, was born on January 3, 1834 in Massachusetts.  He lived a greater part of his life in Long Island, New York.  He married Ester H. Bennett in 1848.  She was born on November 4, 1826 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York.  They moved West to Wisconsin in 1857 and settled in Freedom, Wisconsin until the end of the Civil War.

During the Civil War, he enlisted in Company E, of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry on August 20th, 1864.  He was a private.  David survived the harsh war and mustered out on June 30th, 1865.  He is listed on the Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers:  War the the Rebellion.  After the Civil War, he moved to Grand Chute, Wisconsin where he became a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) post in Appleton.

Ester died on March 3, 1892 leaving David a widower.  He spent the last nine years of his life living with his son, Henry Benjamin Stillman in Bovina, Outagamie County, Wisconsin.  He went home to the Lord on March 17, 1910 at Bonvina, Outagamie County, Wisconsin and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Grand Chute, Wisconsin.

Ester and David Stillman had eight children at David's funeral.

Their daughter Florence Nightengale Stillman married Wilburn Hurning.  Their daughter Jessie Bell Hurning married Albert A.H. Bartz, who were my parents.
